Breathnach (1995) refers to personal office items as “civilizing details,” or unique compliments that tell a story about your past and personal tastes. At the office you need something pleasing upon which to focus your eye. Postcards, pictures, and treasures from your travels can be attractively showcased and preserved if they are matted and framed, or placed in a standing rack.

A beautifully appointed office begins with a clutter free work area. Howard (2010) explains that the four steps to successful organization are plan and empty, sort, shop, and reassemble. To streamline your workspace, routinely shred or recycle documents once they have outlived their usefulness, and begin each semester with a fresh plate.
