This semester my Principles of Management class presented (in five different groups) on the topics of mobbing, cyber bullying, bullying in the school system, stalking, and corporate bullying to local high school students. They spent a couple of months researching their topics, practicing their talks, refining their skills, and brainstorming ideas.

The presentation satisfied two goals – that of becoming proficient in public speaking, and of participating in experiential learning.

Their transformation throughout the process was truly remarkable. Not only did they rise to the challenge, but they surpassed my expectations. Their creativity, ingenuity, and ability to work as a team were showcased to the community in a way that was unforgettable. I admired their courage and grace under pressure (particularly the group that was covered by Channel 4 WSMV!).

When I presented to a corporate audience (shortly after receiving my doctorate), the host (a former dissertation committee member) stated “I’ve reached the point when the student surpasses the teacher.” During the past two weeks, I felt this way often.

To the 3610 MGMT class of Fall, 2011: I will miss you. Teaching this class has truly been my privilege. You have made an impact, you have changed lives, and you have made a difference. I am proud to have known all of you, and to have shared in your journey.
